USER GUIDE
Analysis Framework
Analytical frameworks are models that aim to guide and structure an analyst’s thinking in a systematic manner. In short, analytical frameworks guide and facilitate sense making and understanding. An analytical framework is often presented visually.
Assessments
Assessments are data collection implemented by actors (either humanitarian, governmental, academic etc.) in a certain context in order to evaluate and assess the situation and potentially to identify the needs of the affected population. Sources on the DEEP platform can be identified by users as assessments and thus appear on the assessment dashboard. For more information on humanitarian assessments and their usefulness in the humanitarian system, please visit the HumanitarianResponse website.
Assignments
In this category, a line graph presents the Tagging evolution of the main projects you have been working on for the past 3 months. It allows you to capture the Tagging trends of your projects.
Assisted Tagging / NLP
Natural language processing (NLP) is a branch of artificial intelligence (AI) that enables computers to comprehend, generate, and manipulate human language. In the context of the DEEP platform, NLP is used to help users in the Tagging process. The DEEP platform tries to support the user in making the Tagging process faster and easier. To do so, the platform identifies potential tags when an excerpt is selected by the user. Suggestions of tags will appear and you will be able to confirm, change or discard those tags, helping the NLP to improve by doing so.
Connector
The Recent activity category compiles the latest activities for your projects. This includes any new entry on a source or any new comment [HP1] added by taggers on entries of your projects. You will find the name of the project and the name of the person tagging an entry or sharing a comment on the project.
By clicking on the entry or entry comment, you will be able to access the specific entry or the specific comment. In case it is a comment, you will then be able to answer the comment by clicking on the speech bubble icon.
Dashboard
A dashboard on the DEEP is a page displaying visual data of your projects. It can either be the dashboard of your tagged data of the dashboard of your assessments.
DEEP
The Data Entry and Exploration Platform (DEEP) is a platform offering a suite of tools in order to allow for compiling, storing and structuring data and qualitative information.
Entries
An entry is a section of the text (a few words, up to a few lines) from the source you have uploaded. This entry needs to be specific enough to be understood out of context but short enough in order to maintain a reasonable and efficient workload for future analysis of collected data. Indeed, your exports will include all of the entries you have tagged, thus it is important to keep these criteria in mind to avoid having an overload of pages of entries.
Export
An export refers to a file exported from the DEEP and composed of the data tagged in the platform. It can take several forms: word, excel, PDF. It can also include all of the data tagged for the project, or only data tagged in some categories of the framework, or data tagged between a certain date range, according to your needs.
Project
A project on the DEEP is a layout which allows the user to have a specific frame on the platform for his/ her data. Thanks to the specificities given to the so-called project during its creation, it will enable a team of users to work on it in order to collect data channeled around a specific theme, country or need. As DEEP platform is open sourced, other users will be able to see the project appearing on their account but will not be able to edit it or view confidential content without an approved access (given by the administrator of the project).
Quality Control
The process of quality control on the DEEP platform is set for tagged data to be reviewed, verified and validated. Such a process ensures a higher quality of collected data and allows for reduced duplication. This has to be managed by an entitled person on the project.
Source
A source is any type of document that you will import on the DEEP platform and that will become a source for your data collation.
Chrome extension
Tagging is the process during which you will extract entries (pieces of information) from the sources uploaded on the DEEP platform for your project. This process includes choosing the piece of information under interest as well as categorizing it in the relevant section(s) of the framework implemented.
Widget
A widget is an element that displays information within the graphical user interface of the DEEP. Most references to widgets in the DEEP platform are made during the process of creating a framework. Widgets are then including any new category or tool that you would add to your analytical framework for the Tagging process. You will then be able to tag your data with the widgets you have added. It could be the following: text, number, date, date range, time, time range, scale, single select, multi select, organigram and geographic area.
