Türkiye–Syria Earthquake RESPONSE
On February 6, 2023, a massive earthquake struck Türkiye and Syria, leading to widespread devastation across both countries. The earthquake’s rapid onset, severe impact, and high casualty rates created an urgent need for immediate humanitarian assistance. With infrastructure severely damaged and affected populations spanning a large geographic area, the response required extensive coordination and real-time data analysis. DEEP’s deployment played a crucial role in consolidating and analyzing vast amounts of secondary data, ensuring that responders had timely and actionable information.
Partners
DEEP was deployed in collaboration with DFS, iMMAP, Premise, OCHA, and IFRC. The platform integrated the contributions of over 150 humanitarian community members, who actively participated in data sharing and analysis.
Donor
This project was supported by USAID BHA, as part of the 2023 DEEP Project funding cycle.

ROLE
DEEP’s role was to lead the data consolidation and Secondary Data Review (SDR), offering a collaborative space for data sharing and analysis for the humanitarian response teams on the ground.

Project Background
The Türkiye-Syria earthquake response was activated just hours after the earthquake on February 6, 2023, marking one of the most rapid deployments. Within 12 hours of the disaster, DEEP published its first situational report, setting a precedent for real-time reporting.
What We Did
DEEP provided a central data repository with processed data from over 3,500 documents, resulting in more than 18,000 data entries. Key products included situational reports, Response Monitoring Matrix (with ChatGPT support), and a joint analysis from DFS and other partners.
HOW We Did IT
Using DEEP’s automated NLP tools for rapid data classification and geo-tagging, the team produced summaries, topic modeling, and response matrices. DEEP also facilitated daily exports of data for the humanitarian community and maintained open access to structured data through DEEP’s dashboards.
Impact
The Türkiye-Syria response highlighted DEEP’s agility in rapidly consolidating and processing large volumes of data, allowing stakeholders to coordinate efficiently. The daily exports, combined with situational reports, provided actionable insights that significantly aided real-time decision-making and response coordination.
