Morocco Earthquake RESPONSE
On September 8, 2023, a powerful earthquake struck Morocco, affecting several remote and mountainous areas. The earthquake caused significant damage, especially in regions with limited infrastructure, which further complicated response efforts. As rescue and relief operations were challenged by the rugged terrain and disrupted infrastructure, there was an urgent need for coordinated data and situational awareness. DEEP’s activation provided essential support to the response, offering consolidated data and daily situational updates that enabled agencies to prioritize resources and reach vulnerable communities swiftly.
Partners
Deployed in partnership with the Remote A&A Cell, IFRC, and Moroccan government agencies.
Donor
This project was funded by USAID BHA under the DEEP Project for 2023.
▼
ROLE
DEEP supported the A&A Cell by establishing an SDR framework for secondary data analysis, contributing daily situational updates aligned with UNDAC methodology, and providing vulnerability assessment support.

Project Background
The DEEP team activated shortly after the Morocco earthquake on September 8, 2023, providing a collaborative data-sharing environment for partners.
What We Did
Key outputs included the creation of daily situational updates and vulnerability analyses. DEEP’s consolidated data repository facilitated rapid response, informing partners about needs and challenges in affected areas.
HOW We Did IT
DEEP utilized NLP tools to streamline data extraction and analysis, with automated geo-tagging and summarization to speed up reporting. Daily situational updates, dashboards, and real-time collaboration through DEEP’s platform provided partners with timely, structured data for operational planning.
Impact
DEEP’s Morocco earthquake response demonstrated its capacity to facilitate coordinated, real-time analysis. The data repository and situation updates fostered timely decision-making, helping partners focus efforts on high-priority areas and vulnerable populations.
